This team arranges activities suitable for school groups from first-year nursery to sixth-year secondary school. Cross-disciplinary activities on a variety of themes are on offer: history and analysis of the territory, the links between art and science, museum professions, archaeological discoveries, industrial heritage, etc.

Depending on the age of the participants, the mediation team offers various modules to be selected in line with the participants’ wishes and needs.

Each module lasts 2 hours: 1-hour visit followed by 1-hour artistic or scientific workshop. Several modules can, of course, be combined.

THE MODULES FOR 2.5 – 6-YEAR-OLDS

  • Les mains dans la terre (Hands in the clay): The senses are at the heart of this formula, where apprentice potters can use them on the museum’s 15 interactive supports, as well as learning to work with clay.
  • Nos sens s’éveillent à la Préhistoire (Our senses awaken to Prehistoric Times): Led by Raga, our Neanderthal cousin, young visitors go into the researchers’ offices and learn about prehistoric times through touch, sight, sound, etc.
  • Et moi, suis-je si différent d’un ours ? (Am I so different from a bear?) Through the tales and legends of the region, the activities teams introduces young children to the idea of culture and traditions.

THE MODULES FOR 6 – 12-YEAR-OLDS

  • Musée : mode d’emploi (User’s guide to museums): What is a museum? A crime mystery is the pretext for exploring the exhibition rooms, behind the scenes and the ceramists’ workshop.
  • Enquête en Préhistoire (Prehistoric investigation): By conducting an investigation, the participants find out about the archaeology professions and learn a little more about our past.
  • Dans l’atelier du céramiste (In the ceramist’s workshop): Use your eyes, hands and ears! Who will earn their fledgling ceramist’s diploma? Taking up the challenge, visitors discover the techniques linked to the art of ceramics.
  • Qui suis-je ?D’où venons-nous ? (Who am I? Where do we come from?) The EMA is the perfect place to find out about the wealth of cultures and research what lies behind our identities.

THE MODULES FOR 12 – 18-YEAR-OLDS

  • Sur les traces de Néandertal (In the footsteps of the Neanderthals): What has our Neanderthal cousin left us?With the archaeologist and his team, participants learn how to glean information from artefacts and bones, and find out how our knowledge is built up.
  • La derle au cœur d’Andenne (Derle – a type of clay – at the heart of Andenne): Between history and geography, this route teaches participants how a city grows up around its main asset. In Andenne, the development of the Meuse city was shaped by plastsoil.
  • (Dé)chiffrons l’Art (Art and Arithmetic): People are said to be either a whiz at maths or great at crafts. In reality, arts and maths often merge in ways we don’t imagine.
  • Scientifiquement surprenant (Scientifically amazing): Building our knowledge of the prehistoric past involves the most innovative scientific discoveries. As for ceramics, there’s still a lot to surprise you!
  • D’où je viens, où je vais ? (Where do I come from? Where am I going?) Thinking about ethics. A visit to explore our origins that looks at the complex concept of culture and reveals the cognitive biases that hamper us when we consider the subject.

100% PREHISTORY ACTIVITY 

On request and age-adapted, this formula combines a visit to the Prehistory floor of the EMA and a visit to the Scladina Cave Archaeological Centre (seven kilometres from Le Phare, where excavations are still ongoing).

ACTIVITIES FOCUSING ON THE TEMPORARY EXHIBITION

Every year, the EMA hosts a temporary exhibition devoted to either Ceramics or Prehistory. A one-hour activity can also be scheduled, linked to this exhibition and adapted to the age of the participants.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

  • Please be sure to book at least 30 days before the visit
  • Conditions:
    • 5 – 6-year-old group: min. 10 – max. 15 children per group. Maximum of four groups.
    • 6 – 18-year-old group: min. 15 – max. 25 participants per group. Maximum of four groups.
  • ‘Children’s Groups’rates: € 4/child, free for accompanying adults
  • Le Phare has a reception area for breaks or snacks.
  • A teaching dossier is available on request
